Chloride is best known to us as part of the sodium chloride compound – table salt, in other words. However, although the dangers of too much salt in the diet are widely known, did you know that chloride on its own is a vital mineral for your health?
Chloride works as an electrolyte in the body, helping to maintain the proper flow of fluids and signals in and out of cells. It also works to keep the body's pH neutral. Chloride is found in the stomach in the form of hydrochloric acid, which is responsible for breaking food down during the digestive process. Chloride is also found in the liver, where it helps in removing toxins from the body.
A deficiency of chloride in the body can lead to low blood pressure, weakness and poor muscle function.
Most people will obtain all the chloride they need from their normal diet. However, since it is found in very high levels in processed food, it's not advisable to take chloride supplements without checking first with your doctor.
