Hemp protein powder comes from the hemp plant, a type of cannabis. Hemp is a complete protein, which means that it contains all of the essential amino acids the body cannot make for itself.
Hemp protein powder is a good alternative to other powders for anyone following a vegetarian or vegan diet, or who is lactose or gluten intolerant.
A rich source of both protein and fibre, hemp is also an excellent source of essential fatty acids such as oleic acid, linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid. It also contains plenty of vitamin E and many other important minerals such as potassium, phosphorus, sulphur, chlorophyll, magnesium, thiamin, niacin and riboflavin.
Hemp is also a good source of arginine, an amino acid which plays a key role in the production of nitric oxide – this is a gas which helps blood vessels to dilate, and thereby lowers blood pressure and helps to prevent heart disease.
Hemp protein powder is available unflavoured, or in a variety of slightly sweetened flavours. Either is good for adding to protein shakes, or sprinkling on salads and cereals.
Hemp protein powder contains only trace amounts of THC, the psychoactive compound found in cannabis.
