Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a pale vinegar, made by fermenting cider or apple must with bacteria and yeast. All kinds of vinegar have been used for centuries for health and household purposes as well as flavouring, and apple cider vinegar is no exception.

Acetic acid is the main active ingredient in apple cider vinegar. Studies have shown that it may help to control blood pressure, and might also have a role to play in removing the plaque which can clog arteries.

Meanwhile, numerous studies have shown that acetic acid can help to lower blood sugar levels in diabetics, and increase insulin sensitivity. Chlorogenic acid, found in apple cider vinegar, is an antioxidant known to help prevent the oxidisation of cholesterol.

Apple cider vinegar can be added to food in the same way one might use any other vinegar, or it can be taken in capsule form. It can also be applied in a weak solution to the skin, where it's thought to help clear up acne, or used to rinse hair, where it's thought to add shine. The antibacterial properties of acetic acid also make apple cider vinegar a useful household cleanser.
