Nutrition and Sexual Health

Sexual health is not a topic which is often discussed openly, but it should be! Sexual health is just as important as heart health, digestive health, and mental health, and without proper knowledge of, and care for potential problems, we could be putting ourselves at risk of developing a more severe psychological illness or disease.

It is important to understand that the state of your sexual health can change at any time, and is most commonly influenced by age, physical health, and mental health. Everything is intertwined, so if you are struggling with either physical or mental health, it is not uncommon for you also to experience some degree of sexual health concern. Fortunately, there are ways that we can help ourselves to improve.

Firstly, it is essential to visit your doctor who will be able to rule out any underlying conditions that may need to be addressed by a physician. However, for most of us, we may be able to improve our sexual health at home ourselves, and this can be done through making a few small changes to the daily diet. While there are many causes of sexual dysfunction, poor nutrition could be one of the culprits.

There are two ways to improve sexual health through nutrition:

1. Addressing Physical/Mental Health Concerns

There are many different physical and mental health conditions which can contribute towards sexual health concerns. Diabetes, for example, can cause damage to the nerves which may result in a loss of sensitivity in the sexual organs. Depression could cause a loss of libido and desire for sex, while high blood pressure medications may decrease blood flow to the penis, resulting in erectile dysfunction (ED).

While these conditions cannot be cured through good nutrition, it's often possible to manage the symptoms through eating a healthy diet which includes a wide range of beneficial nutrients. By getting your physical or mental health conditions under control, it may be possible to reduce the risk of sex-related side effects and help to ensure you continue to enjoy a healthy and active sex life.

2. Taking Supplements for Sexual Health

You may also wish to take supplements which can help to directly address any sexual health issues which are concerning you. One of the most popular supplements is Horny Goat Weed, which is also known by the slightly less tasteless name of Barrenwort. Barrenwort contains the active ingredient icariin, which has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for many years as a safe and natural treatment for ED.

There are a number of other widely-available supplements that you may also wish to look into. Ginseng is very popular, and is believed to help enhance libido in both men and women. Another is arginine, which helps to improve circulation resulting in greater blood flow to the penis, and for women it may boost endurance, as well as encouraging more powerful orgasms thanks to its toning effect on muscle.

Talk About It

Believe it or not, sexual dysfunction is actually one of the most prevalent disorders in the world, and incorporates a wide range of conditions including ED, premature ejaculation, dyspareunia, vaginismus, and more. Despite this, it is one disorder that is very rarely discussed in an open forum, and tends to be one of the more hush-hush topics that we keep to ourselves. For our own wellbeing and happiness, it is vital that we put our health first, and learn more about the different ways that we can keep ourselves healthy – mentally, physically, and sexually. So don’t be afraid to talk about it, and take charge of your own body.
