DURING WORKOUT SUPPLEMENTATION
The ABC's of Sports Supplements
Carbohydrates, or "carbs," are the primary fuel for our brain and muscles and are usually the main source of calories in a healthy diet. Carbs help support the central nervous system.
It is better to choose complex carbohydrates than simple carbohydrates. For example, white rice, a simple carb, is an unhealthy alternative to brown rice, a complex carb, because the fiber has been stripped away.
Why Is It Important to Eat Carbohydrates?
Our bodies do not naturally synthesize carbohydrates, so they must be added to the diet. Natural food sources for complex carbs include:
• Seven-grain bread
• Whole grain oats
Simple carbs include:
• White-flour bread or pasta
• Table sugar
• Ice cream
• Soft drinks
Depriving the body of carbohydrates may result in:
• Ketosis, which occurs when the body breaks down fat because you don't have enough sugar for energy. Ketone buildup can cause nausea, headache, and fatigue.
• Reduced energy levels and weakness
• Reduced ability to fight disease and heal wounds
When ingested as a sports supplement*, carbohydrates may help:
• Improve athletic performance and muscle growth
• Prevention muscle loss
• Post-workout recovery
* As always, FILTUR recommends that you check with your physician before trying any sports supplement. They can help decide how supplements can best serve you.
How Are Carbohydrate Supplements Sold?
Carbohydrates are sold either in powder or capsule form.
Some people claim that capsules, or pills, don't always disintegrate properly once swallowed. Others have trouble swallowing them.
Powdered supplements are mixed with liquid, so some people find this an easier way to digest them. If taken this way, be sure to stir thoroughly and consume the full contents of the glass.
Whatever you choose, always follow storage instructions properly. Heat and moisture will affect any product.
Recommended Daily Intake
The right amount of carbohydrates one should consume depends on age, gender, and other factors, such as body weight. In general, adults should get at least 60 percent of our calories from carbohydrates; but if you are in serious training, perform endurance sports, or are considered an elite athlete, then you require much more.
Different distributors list different ratios of ingredients in their sports supplements. Read product labels carefully to understand what you're buying.
